Gertie – Miniature Dachshund

17 Month Old Female

Miniature Dachshund

This little lady is young and there is no hiding the fact that she is carrying too much weight. Whilst she is young enough for this not to have impacted on her good health, she is now on a strict weight reduction diet and this will need to be continued rigorously by her new owners for some time to come new owners must be committed to continuing to ensure her weight loss continues and be happy to update the rescue on her progress.

Gertie came into the charity with the very lovely Miss Twiggy and whilst they can be rehomed together, these two dogs have differing needs while they get to grips with everyday life and therefore owners who would prefer to take just one dog can also apply. Gertie is a gentle, intelligent, loyal companion who prefers to be around her owner(s) than other dogs, although she is not a problem in their company. It is likely that she will become considerably more playful and feel less vulnerable as she starts to lose weight and can be persuaded to play when encouraged by Twiggy.

The company of another dog would be beneficial  and preferable. Gertie, like Twiggy, is not reliably housetrained and this will improve as confidence is gained regarding the great outdoors. Gertie is better on a lead than Twiggy but can’t manage to walk all that far and again this needs a patient owner who wants to restore this princess to her former glory – she is young dog that will be very capable when lighter on her feet. Gertie also suffers from a bit of separation anxiety but her foster carers feel this is all part and parcel of the general upheaval in her recent life.

Gertie is very trainable and would benefit from owners who are around for most of the day and can devote some time to her continued training and socialisation.   As with Twiggy, an adult only home or with older children would be the aim.  Prospective owners considering applying for Gertie with Twiggy should read and understand the needs of both dogs and be aware that they are likely to progress faster with separate training etc.

Gertie will be re homed on a neutering contract due to breed and the risks associated with IVDD it is advised to wait until she is 2 years before neutering.  Reduced cost neutering is available at our vets on request.  She is vaccinated and micro chipped and is up to date with flea and worming treatments.   Twiggy is currently being fostered near Hastings in East Sussex.  .  Please go to our website and complete an application form.  We reply to all applications, should you not receive a response within 48 hours then please email and we will be pleased to assist you.  Home check and set donation applies.
