Twiggy – Miniature Dachshund

12 Month Old Female

Miniature Dachshund

To meet Twiggy is to fall in love with her. She is a tiny little girl but full of life and energy – just as you might expect from a one year old. Twiggy is in good health and is very bright, intelligent, gentle affectionate and playful. She came into the charity with Gertie and whilst the two can be rehomed together, they have differing needs while they get to grips with a normal everyday routine and life and owners who wish to just take one dog may also apply.

Twiggy is prone to separation anxiety and this is mitigated by having another dog or dogs around that she can play with and gain confidence from. As she is so small, her playmate  (the more play the merrier) would ideally not overwhelm her and similar small breeds are probably best such as other Dachshunds, Chihuahuas etc. Twiggy eats and sleeps well downstairs but is currently not reliably housetrained and so this is being worked on in foster care. She can be nervous girl and will need continued  exposure to the routine things you to increase her confidence.  Tiggy was born without a tail, she has not been injured and no treatment is needed.

Twiggy is not used to being in a car, shows very little understanding of the World outside the front and back doors and is easily frightened out on a walk by cars, people, other dogs, bicycles, joggers etc. This of course is all being worked on in foster care but new owners need to be around most of the time to nurture her experiences and confidence so that she can enjoy the great outdoors. Indoors she is more confident and is showing an accelerated interest in toys, antler chews and chase me type games.

She is full of character and just a delight. Due to her size and the need for a period of adjustment, Twiggy would be best suited to an adult only home or with children above the age of 12.  Prospective owners considering applying for Gertie with Twiggy should read and understand the needs of both dogs and be aware that they are likely to progress faster with separate training etc but with experienced Dachshund owners they could be homed together.

Twiggy will be re homed on a neutering contract due to breed and the risks associated with IVDD it is advised to wait until she is 2 years before neutering.  Reduced cost neutering is available at our vets on request.  She is vaccinated and micro chipped and is up to date with flea and worming treatments.   Twiggy is currently being fostered near Hastings in East Sussex.
